In this ad the conservation organisation World Wildlife Fund uses a hand painted as a crocodile to ask people to support the cause or "give a hand to wildlife".
If you ask someone if they want/need a hand you are asking if they want help, e.g. can I give you a hand with cleaning-up after the party? (Not many people offer this so you will probably make a friend-for-life :-)
